What You Need to Know About the New Texas Homestead Exemption Law

A new Texas law took effect on January 1, 2022, which provides tax relief to homeowners. Homeowners can now file their Homestead Exemption in the year that they purchase their property. Prior to 2022, homeowners had to wait until January 1st of the following year that they purchased their property to file for their Homestead Exemption.

WHO DOES THIS NEW LAW IMPACT?

  1. Homeowners who purchased their property in 2021 - You may now file for a Homestead Exemption as of January 1, 2022.

  2. Homeowners who purchase their home in 2022 - You may now file for a Homestead Exemption in the SAME YEAR that you purchase your home.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE FILING FOR A HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION?

  1. The property must be your primary residence.

  2. The address on your driver’s license must match that of the residence you will be filing for a Homestead Exemption.

  3. Beware of scams! You may have received letters in the mail from companies encouraging you to pay a fee to file your exemption - that’s a scam. Filing is free and takes just a few minutes online.

Be sure to fill out the form completely and read the instructions carefully - you qualify for the Disabled Veteran Exemption, the General Disability Exemption, or the over 65 Years of Age Exemption.
